Beyond Coal Illinois

Watch our new "Moving Illinois Beyond Coal" Video!
Illinois Chapter Jack Darin discusses our recent wins in Illinois to move beyond coal and to clean energy!

Clean Power Lake County Campaign

For over 90 years the Waukegan coal plant has polluted the air of water of Lake County and Lake Michigan. Currently owned and operated by Midwest Generation, the coal plant is largest emitter of sulfur dioxide and mercury in the entire county according to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Local residents and organizations are joining forces to build a clean energy future for Lake County and asking Midwest Generation to set a reasonable retirement date and transition for the Waukegan coal plant.

Victory for Chicago Community Energy Choice Campaign!

In last Tuesday's election, Chicago voters passed a proposal to allow the city to negotiate for better electricity prices on behalf of residential customers and small businesses. The city is one of hundreds of Illinois communities participating in so-called electricity aggregation and is by far the largest city in the nation to attempt such a large bulk purchase for electricity.

About the Edwards Plant

Edwards Coal Plant and Pollution

The Edwards coal-fired power plant near Bartonville is an outdated coal plant that lies on the banks of the Illinois River. Operating for more than 50 years, the Edwards power plant burns coal and pollutes central Illinois - including Peoria, Bartonville, Pekin and East Peoria. This coal plant contributes to dangerous levels of air pollution in the area.

Organizational Membership in the Alliance

The Central Illinois Healthy Community Alliance (CIHCA) is a coalition of individuals and organizations committed to creating a sustainable and healthy community for Central Illinois. CIHCA is concerned about the decades of air and water pollution created by the Edwards coal plant south of Bartonville. CIHCA is working to retire the Edwards plant and transition Central Illinois to a cleaner energy economy by reducing energy use, and moving to renewables such as wind and solar.
