George Crabtree runs what might be called the Manhattan Project for advanced electric-car batteries. Which isn’t hard to imagine, since his Joint Center for Energy Storage Research is based at the U.S. Department of Energy’s sprawling Argonne National Laboratory campus, outside Chicago, one of the sites where research on nuclear reactors continued after World War II. Crabtree’s $120 ­million mission seems almost as ambitious.
