Overview

The Trip

We will backpack for five days on the 165-mile Ozark Highlands Trail in the Ozark National Forest in Northern Arkansas. Following the hike, we will canoe the Class I Buffalo River for two days. The Buffalo is the first National River, administered by the National Park Service. Along the way we’ll see the forest in its most brilliant colors of autumn. Streams and waterfalls should be flowing freely after fall rains. Black bears will still be active, but the bugs and snakes should be pretty much gone by then.

Itinerary

We plan to start the hike from the trail’s beginning at Lake Fort Smith State Park where we will gather on Saturday then begin the trip on Sunday. We will end the backpack portion of the trip five days and 46 miles later at Redding campground, where we shuttle to the Buffalo River for two days of Class I canoeing. Actual daily campsites will depend upon the water source and view. The canoe route will depend upon river conditions. We hope to be able to canoe the upper, bluff-lined portion of this, the first National River.
