WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the U.S. Senate confirmed Gina McCarthy as EPA Administrator in a bipartisan vote of 59-40.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune issued the following statement:
"The Sierra Club and our 2.1 million members and supporters congratulate Gina McCarthy on her confirmation as Environmental Protection Agency Administrator.
"After dedicating her 25-year career to protecting our air and water, Gina McCarthy has a proven record of protecting American families and getting things done. It’s no wonder she received bipartisan support from the Senate today. We look forward to working with her to continue the EPA’s vital work of protecting American families and holding polluters accountable.
"And while we are pleased that McCarthy has finally been confirmed, there is simply no good reason that it should take 137 days for a qualified, experienced, bi-partisan nominee like her to be confirmed. Just as there is no good reason the leaders appointed to protect workers and consumers should be prevented from doing their jobs for upwards of two years, only to be tossed out with the bathwater.
"These delays are the cost of Washington gridlock, and to ensure that this never happens again, the Senate must remain vigilant against further obstructionism and stand ready to do what it takes to ensure every nominee gets a fair up-or-down vote.”
