2012 Election Wrap Up

Last November’s election was an historic moment for the environmental movement. Across the country and on the national stage our issues were front and center during one of the most important elections in recent history. Together we worked to reelect a President and helped to put more environmental champions in the House and Senate. And we did it all while fighting against entrenched big coal and oil interests who were spending hundreds of millions of dollars to keep Congress in their pocket and put one of their own in the White House.

It’s an important year in Massachusetts. One of our state’s own has just become Secretary of State. John Kerry is a stalwart public servant who has always been a strong supporter of environmental and public health issues. While we wish him the greatest of luck serving as first diplomat of the United States it also means that the time has come to elect his successor.

Sherrod Brown: Standing Strong Against Big Polluters

The fight for a clean energy future and a healthier planet for our kids isn't being waged just in blue states. And it's not happening just in red states, either – even though more than 80 percent of our nation's wind capacity is in Republican congressional districts. No, the fight for clean energy is happening in every corner of our country, regardless of what party folks there happen to support.

Just look at the polls. From Oklahoma to New York to Ohio, huge majorities of Americans support growing our clean energy economy – and it’s not hard to figure out why. The clean energy sector has been growing at double the rate of the rest of the economy, creating tens of thousands of new jobs from coast to coast. They're good-paying jobs, too, with salaries 13 percent higher than average. And who could oppose the cleaner air and cleaner water that results from moving away from dirty energy? It’s no wonder the public is on board.

Bill Clinton Exposes Romney's Dangerous Ignorance on Climate Disruption

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Former President Bill Clinton had some strong words for Mitt Romney’s dismissive stance on climate disruption. Speaking to students in Minneapolis on Tuesday, Clinton reminded them of what Romney said in the first debate, noting that Romney “Ridiculed the president for his efforts to fight global warming in economically beneficial ways. He said, ‘Oh, you’re going to turn back the seas.’ In my part of America, we would like it if someone could’ve done that yesterday.”

President Obama talks Climate on MTV

Last week, the young voters submitting questions for President Obama's appearance on MTV did something all three of the moderators of the Presidential debates claimed they “ran out of time” to do: ask a question about the ongoing climate crisis. In response, Obama mentioned the “huge contrast” on the issue he has with Republican candidate Mitt Romney, who mocked the climate crisis at the Republican National Convention. Obama went on to talk about the significant cuts in carbon emissions that will result from the fuel efficiency standards, clean energy investments, and energy efficiency initiatives he's implemented – and called for more action.
