Sand It, and They Will Come: LBI Family Converts Yard to Nesting "Beach"
by Kathy Lacey on Monday, July 11, 2016
Since the project's inception, our goal has always been to "restore the balance." Not just increase the population of terrapins, but return the area to a more natural setting for nesting Terrapins.
May 29 Meeting Gets the Terrapin Project Off to a Great Start
by Kathy Lacey on Monday, July 11, 2016
May 29 was our first "open" volunteer meeting of the season, and it was more successful than I could have imagined! Not only did 50 new volunteers attend AND sign up, Brownie Troop 309 came to join us and donated $200 of their cookie money to the project!
Turtle Conservancy to Partner with the Terrapin Nesting Project
by Kathy Lacey on Monday, July 11, 2016
We are being recognized by the rest of the terrapin conservation community as being a group to be taken very seriously. We have no building, no research center, but we have the strength, motivation, people power and will to succeed.
" A NEW PARTNERSHIP!!!"
by Kathy Lacey on Tuesday, April 5, 2016
There are 330, at last count, known species of turtles and tortoises on earth, not including sub-species. Most of these species are in trouble. How then, does a world renowned organization such as the Turtle Conservancy decide which species to focus on?
"OUTREACH PROGRAM"
by Kathy Lacey on Monday, October 26, 2015
As part of our continuing outreach program, 5 kindergarten classes in Pennsylvania had a chance to learn all about the 'Terrapin Nesting Project' last week. Many of our volunteers come from Pa., so the chances are good these children could be vacationing on LBI!
"VOLUNTEER MEETINGS"
by Kathy Lacey on Friday, July 17, 2015
We have been holding volunter meetings every Tuesday since the beginning of June at the Barnegat Light Light State Park @10am for new and seasoned volunteers.
These have proven to be invaluable. We have gained many new volunteers this season, to date, 36, and the consistency has kept everyone up to date on what's going on. It's been a great way to share our recent successes, get people to sign up for the following week's activities and share stories on what's been happening in the field.
"Barnegat Bay Day"
by Kathy Lacey on Saturday, July 11, 2015
Wednesday was Barnegat Bay Day at the Foundation for the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies. It was a perfect opportunity for the Terrapin Project to share our success, recruite new volunteers, educate those not already involved and have a lot of fun.
Many of the volunteers gave up their day to be there...I really do have the best group of children, teens, young and older adults helping with the project. They are so enthused about the terrapins, their environment, their island, and it shows! Our table was very popular thruought the whole hot and humid day!!!

"Hatcheries are Full"
by Kathy Lacey on Saturday, July 11, 2015
In spite of the difficult start to the season, our volunteers have gone beyond the call of duty and made this season another successful one. Both the north and south end hatcheries are full to capacitiy. Any nests laid after thius point are to be left in the ground and protected as natural nests.
"1,000 EGGS IN 20 DAYS!!!!! PLUS 19 "NATURAL NESTS"!
by Kathy Lacey on Saturday, June 27, 2015
The 5th year for the nesting project is truly one for the record books! After such a brutal winter, we weren't sure what to expect. For the previous 2 seasons, our first nest has been laid on the 5th of June. This year, much to our surprise, May 31st, @ 58* we had a nest. So cold! That was it for almost a week. Then the weather took a turn for the better...temperatures climbing into the 70"s and above.
