Washington, DC – This afternoon, Senator Joe Manchin released the text of legislation that would overhaul federal permitting requirements under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the Clean Water Act.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Senate voted 69-27 to ratify the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, finalizing the amendment that was first agreed upon by 150 nations in 2016. The Kigali Amendment aims to phase out the use of dangerous hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), potentially avoiding half a degree Celsius of warming by the end of the century. Hydrofluorocarbons have become the fastest-growing greenhouse gasses in the U.S. and are emitted annually at a rate exceeding 150 million metric tons of CO2 — the equivalent emissions of about 40 coal-fired power plants.

The U.S. Department of Energy has agreed to review energy efficiency standards for 20 categories of consumer and commercial appliances and equipment, as part of a settlement approved today in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Updating the 20 overdue standards would mean huge savings for U.S. consumers and businesses, approximately $650 billion in cumulative utility bill savings through 2050. This action will also prevent between 970 and over 1800 million metric tons of carbon emissions over the same period according to an analysis by the Appliance Standards Awareness Project.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a positive, long awaited step toward clean air for all, the EPA finalized determinations that dozens of areas home to millions of people across the United States have failed to achieve the 2008 and 2015 National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) under the Clean Air Act for ground-level ozone, also known as smog.
