Overview

The Project

Take part in maintaining the trails and shelters of Ketchikan’s waterfront State Parks that are set amongst the old growth of the Tongass National Forest. Located along the protected water of the Inside Passage projects, this trip will include trail maintenance, erecting shelters and information signage, as well as beachcombing and trash removal.

Itinerary

Day 1: Afternoon arrival with time to set up camp at Settler’s Cove State Park. We will enjoy a fireside dinner and an opportunity to go over the upcoming week.

Day 2: A hiking day with provided transport to Ward Lake, where there are options for several different trails of varying length.

Days 3-7: Each morning we will meet each other for breakfast and with the State Park Ranger to receive our assigned tasks for the day. Lunch will be beachside with sandwiches made at breakfast. We gather again in the evening for dinner. There will be some evening programs and fireside s'mores

One of these days will be work free. A guided sea kayaking trip is included and we will be picked up by boat and taken to a remote area to paddle amongst wilderness islands.

Day 8: The trip ends with a shuttle back to downtown Ketchikan.

Logistics

Getting There

Alaska Airlines and Delta serve Ketchikan from Seattle. Alternatively, if time allows, the Alaska Marine Highway leaves Bellingham and travels 36 hours to Alaska.

Please do not make non-refundable travel arrangements until notified to do so by the trip leader.

Accommodations and Food

Accommodation is at the campground. We will have use of a off grid heated to shelter to store luggage and use as a drying/warming shelter. Pit toilets are at the campground and we will have limited use of warm showers at the caretaker station

All meals are provided with an emphasis on local Alaskan seafood.

Trip Difficulty

The trip is moderate. Projects will vary and participants will have choices. No one is expected to exceed their capabilities but everyone should be comfortable hiking 1-2 miles on possibly uneven terrain with work tools. Participants will be asked by Alaska State Parks to sign an additional liability waiver for activities undertaken on State Lands.

Equipment and Clothing

Equipment and Clothing: Working clothes not cotton, sleeping bag and pad, rain tested tent, field tested rain gear(plastic or rubber -- Helly Hansen or Grundens light weight clothing is best, Gore tex can get clogged easily in salty conditions) Rubber boots Xtratuf or like, work gloves not leather, Cup, bowl, knife-fork-spoon, container for sandwich.
