Fast paced and hands-on, this two-day course covers a wide range of wilderness medicine topics for people who travel in the outdoors. Whether spending time in the backcountry is your passion or your profession, you should never have to ask, "What do I do now?" On this course, you'll learn how to prepare for the unexpected. The Wilderness Medicine Institute's curriculum is unique and includes many advanced topics that other programs leave out such as dislocation reduction, focused spinal assessment and epinephrine administration. In just two days, you'll have the knowledge, skills and ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations. Additionally, no prior first aid experience or certification is necessary. Those completing this course will receive an Adult Child CPR and WFA certification from the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS.
Wilderness First Responder Recertification
If you hold a current Wilderness First Responder certification from WMI you will receive a WMI WFR certification upon successful completion of your WFA. Please bring a copy of your current certification if other than WMI. If you hold a current WFR certification from any other wilderness medicine organization you will receive a letter of course completion in lieu of a WMI WFR certification. This letter of completion may allow you to recertify with your original certifying organization. You must contact that organization prior to your WMI course to ensure that our course will meet their requirements for recertification. Participants using the WFA course to recertify their WFR will be required to pass both a written and a practical test on day 2 of the course. Check the following web page for information and resources on how to best prepare for your course: http://www.nols.edu/wmi/admissions/recertification.shtml All students are required to submit a photocopy of their WFR certification card on the first day of the course. There is a one-year grace period for recertification of WMI cards (Please keep in mind that your certification is not current during this grace period and will not be viewed as a valid Wilderness First Responder certification once the grace period has begun.)
WMI Student Agreement
Please download this agreement form http://www.nols.edu/wmi/pdf/wmi_agreement.pdf and read it very carefully as it affects your legal rights. Bring the two-page signed document to the first day of the course. If you are a minor, a parent or guardian must sign the document. Failure to provide a signed document will result in you not being able to participate in the course. WMI participants, including minors, will have unsupervised free time throughout the course. Any activities during the free time are not part of the WMI program and are at the sole risk of the participant.

California Alpine Club Information:
The club is private and doesn't have a reception desk. Because the club is private, there are some restrictions on using it. Groups using the club provide their own reception committee and guests can only stay overnight if a club member is there overnight. To those attending the meeting this means you can't check in until an authorized person has opened the building, and, there isn't an option to stay an extra night before or after the meeting unless a club member is there. There is a pay phone for guest use: (415) 388-9940. Most beds are twins, but there are some doubles for those bringing a spouse or significant other. More information about the club is available on their website

Travel/Directions
The California Alpine Lodge is located at: 730 Panoramic Highway, Mill Valley, California 94941
- From South of San Francisco:
- Drive just past SFO on Hwy. 101 and take Hwy. 380 west a few miles to Hwy. 280.
- Take Hwy 280 north (right). Proceed north (changes name to Hwy. 1) across the Golden Gate Bridge (no toll this direction). You are now on Hwys. 1/101 north.
- Drive several miles and take the Hwy.1 North, Stinson Beach, and Mill Valley exit. Follow Hwy.1 (also called Shoreline Hwy.) signs several more miles and take a right turn on Panoramic Highway on top of a ridge. (Hwy.1 continues downhill to the west and is signed for Muir Beach. Don't go there.)
- Follow the ridge (there will be views of the Pacific if it is clear) to another junction in about a mile. Continue on Panoramic Hwy. (double yellow lines) about 45 degrees left and signed to Mt. Tamalpais and Stinson Beach. The Lodge is another 1.4 miles further on the right.
- There is a parking area just before the Lodge with three yellow posts protecting a gas meter in the lot and just beyond, a small sign that says CAC that may be hard to see in the dark. Park in the lot and walk around the Lodge to the front entrance.
- When driving, if you come to a large brown Mt. Tamalpais State Park sign on the left, you have gone about 150 yards too far. You can find maps and further directions to the Lodge by searching Map Quest or Yahoo Maps. Enter the pay phone number (415) 388-9940, at the Lodge as your destination.
- If you are coming from the north on Hwy. 101 take the same exit and follow the same instructions.
