Day 3: We will visit Plimoth Plantation. This is the first settlement of the Pilgrims who arrived in the year 1620. We will walk through their homes and gardens, and visit the homesite of the indigenous people, the Wampanoag. There we will see how the Pilgrims survived those early years and hear their stories from historians who staff the Plantation.
After our visit to the Plantation, we will travel to the town of Plymouth and enjoy seafood while we look out over the Atlantic. We will then go see Plymouth Rock and board the Mayflower II. Costumed guides will tour us through the sailing ship that brought the 102 Pilgrims across the ocean in 66 days.
Next we will travel to Boston to see the USS Constitution in dry dock in the Charlestown Navy Yard for restoration. The Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship (1795). We will be able to see her out of the water -- thus the entire ship! Because of the restoration we will not go below the top deck, but we will be able to tour the top deck. From there we will go to the Warren Tavern (est. 1780) for dinner. The tavern was visited by George Washington and Paul Revere.
Day 4: We will walk the historic “Freedom Trail” in Boston. This 2.5-mile trail covers landmarks of the American Revolution. During this walk we will learn about museums, churches, meetinghouses, burying grounds, parks, a ship, historic markers, and the people who made our history. The costumed storytellers take us back in time and help us relive these important moments, sharing with us the passions and ideals of the founders of this country.
We will take lunch at the Union Oyster House, which is America’s oldest restaurant. Its stalls and oyster bar have been in their original positions since 1826.
For dinner we will dine at Jacob Wirth, which has been serving traditional German food since 1868.
Day 5: We will revisit our favorite landmarks from the Freedom Trail and learn about them in greater depth. At 3 p.m. we will arrive back at Boston Logan Airport.
